THE PORTRAITS
|
The Portraits is a series of dance shorts starring ordinary people from two remote Nordic islands; Bornholm and the Faroe Islands. Artists Rannvá Káradóttir and Laura Navndrup have collected the raw movements and sounds of different local people, experiencing how their culture, the landscape and the geographical isolation is reflected in their bodies.
Nothing is scripted; the people invited into the space simply bring themselves and an object that makes a sound.
The camera brings out minute details in their movement, pointing out how our common language – that of the body – can traverse geographical borders and bring a sense of connection between people and cultures. |

Laura Navndrup is a Danish dance artist based in Copenhagen. Fascinated by movement in all its guises, she takes a broad approach to dance as an art form.
Working with live performance, dance film and integrated video for theatre, she brings attention to what is already there by offering unexpected perspectives on known entities.
Projects to date include stage works, improvised performances, site-specific pieces and integrated video scenography, and she is currently focusing on video works
and site-generic performances. Laura has danced for a number of international choreographers including Shu-Fen Yao (Taiwan), Ingri Fiksdal (Norway) and Tamara Ashley (UK). She was a co-founder of MOTHER dance company and now works with the artist group KRAT.
Rannvá Káradóttir is a Faroese, London based choreographer and filmmaker. Since graduating from Central Saint Martins in London she has developed a distinctive movement vocabulary on screen, exploring
dance in various contexts on stage and on film. Rannvá is the second half of the director duo Rammatik whose films have screened internationally at festivals including
BFI London Film Festival, Birds Eye View Film Festival and Festival du Nouveau Cinema, Montreal.
Her films have won extensive recognition and awards include Best Dance Film at Dance on Camera Festival in New York, Best Experimental Video at Black & White
