8PM: Ryo Ikeshiro: CONSTRUCTION IN KNEADING / LIVE AUDIOVISUALISATION
Construction in Kneading is a live audiovisualisation of a Mandelbox fractal, one of several recent multi-dimensional fractals inspired by the famous Mandelbrot set. The recursion formula upon which the escape-time fractal is based is similar to that of the so-called Baker Map and resembles the actions of kneading dough in bread making. Through this relatively simple process carried out in three dimensions and controlled through the real-time manipulation of the variables, complex patterns arise from which all the audio and the visuals are generated. It is implemented in the programming environment Max/MSP/Jitter.
The work consists of three parts. A cube of data calculated from the fractal is audiovisualised using an increasing number of dimensions in each part. In Part 1, a line or one dimension of data is used. In Part 2, a slice or two dimensions of data are used. In Part 3, a cube or three dimensions of data are visible as points.
The same process is used to produce both the sounds and the moving images and so what you see is what you hear or vice versa, without the one triggering the other. It is like an instrument or a machine that is unpredictable and chaotic. In performance, the audiovisuals are generated in real-time through improvised interactions with the system.

SU 13.04 @ VIDEOTAGE

1-2.30PM: Ryo Ikeshiro WORKSHOP:
Introducing Max/MSP/Jitter, a patch-based programming environment for artists

Max/MSP/Jitter is a patch-based programming environment. Instead of writing lines of code, boxes (known as objects) are connected to other objects by lines (known as patch cords) in what looks more like a flow chart. It is capable of producing and controlling audio, visuals and interaction and a whole lot more. It is an ideal tool for artists.
The session will be in two halves. In the first, I will first present examples from my own work which uses different possibilities of Max. These include generative music, live sampling and manipulation, video interaction and real-time audiovisuals.
In the second half, I will introduce Max, and basic concepts of the patch-based environment will be explained. Attendees with their own laptops will be able to start creating their own patches.
Requirements: Laptop with Max and Headphones

TU 15.04 @ RUN RUN SHAW CMC

5-6.30PM: Ryo Ikeshiro LECTURE: LIVE AUDIOVISUALISATION USING EMERGENT GENERATIVE SYSTEMS
Ryo Ikeshiro will be discussing his approach of “audiovisualisation” which he have been using in his recent works, and how it relates to research into auditory displays and perception, and experimental film traditions. He will also discuss how generative systems are capable of emergent behaviour, and how computational art is very much suited to experimentation and non-anthropomorphic notions of aesthetics rather than emulating humanly created art.
